Air Products Membrane Solutions secures the first certification for membrane nitrogen systems under new IACS rules

On 15 January 2025, Air Products Membrane Solutions recently announced that it is the first company to obtain cybersecurity certification for maritime nitrogen systems under the International Association of Classification Societies’ (IACS) Unified Requirements E26 and E27, achieving a new industry benchmark for cyber resilience at sea.

“Securing the IACS cybersecurity certification positions our systems as a trusted choice for shipowners and operators to safeguard their vessels against cyber threats,” said Dr. Erin Sorensen, General Manager, Air Products Membrane Solutions.  “This certification reflects Air Products Membrane Solutions’ commitment to security and enhances our market competitiveness. It’s a strategic advantage that reinforces our commitment to delivering secure, future-ready solutions to the maritime sector.”

IACS Unified Requirements (UR) E26 and E27 establish minimum cybersecurity standards for new vessels by focusing on UR E26 for the ship as a whole and UR E27 for individual on-board systems and equipment.

2024/2025 cybersecurity report by DNV Cyber stated that 31 percent of maritime professionals reported experiencing at least one cyberattack in the 12 months leading up to October 2024, a significant increase from 17 percent five years earlier.

Air Products Membrane Solutions has a long history of innovation in the maritime industry. Air Products Membrane Solutions was the first company to install a membrane-based nitrogen generation system onboard a ship in 1984. Today, more than 2,500 ships from over 50 countries utilize Air Products Membrane Solutions’ nitrogen generators, which are designed and manufactured at Air Products’ facility in Norway.

Air Products Membrane Solutions’ membrane-based nitrogen generation systems enable large ships to efficiently switch from traditional heavy fuels to cleaner alternative fuels while at sea, resulting in reduced emissions during the transport of goods.

Air Products, the global leader in the production of gas separation and purification membranes, has announced that Air Products Membrane Solutions’ manufacturing facility near St. Louis, Missouri, is now powered by 100 percent renewable, solar energy.

Converting the approximately 180,000 square-foot manufacturing facility to renewable energy is part of Air Products’ overall corporate commitment to quadruple the amount of renewable energy it uses to make its products globally by 2030, compared to a 2023 baseline. Air Products’ renewable energy goal is part of Air Products’ effort to reach net-zero carbon emissions from operations by 2050.

Ameren Missouri is providing the solar energy for our membrane manufacturing plant from one of their solar farms.

“The membranes produced at our facility provide environmental benefits for customers in numerous industries from biogas, to alternative maritime fuel transport, to hydrogen recovery,” said Dr. Erin Sorensen, Air Products’ General Manager, Membrane Solutions. “Now, we can proudly say that Air Products’ membrane separators and systems are built using sustainably-sourced energy providing a positive impact for the local community and helping Air Products reach its sustainability goals while working with our customers to generate a cleaner future.”

Solar power for the facility is provided by Ameren Missouri’s Renewable Solutions program. Based in St. Louis, Ameren Corporation supplies power for 2.4 million electric customers and more than 900,000 natural gas customers in a 64,000-square-mile area throughout Missouri and Illinois.

“We are transforming the energy grid to enhance reliability and resiliency for customers as well as provide cleaner energy to our communities,” said Mark Birk, chairman and president of Ameren Missouri, a subsidiary of Ameren Corporation. “Customers depend on Ameren Missouri to continue investing in new sources of generation to ensure reliability and serve customers for decades to come.”

Air Products Membrane Solutions specializes in the development of hollow fiber membrane separators and systems for onsite gas generation. Air Products designs, engineers, manufactures, and markets a full portfolio of PRISM®Membrane Separators, Marine Systems, and Engineered-to-Order Systems. Air Products’ systems are also designed to create more sustainable energy sources and raise productivity across a variety of industries and applications.

In addition to its current manufacturing facility near St. Louis, Air Products Membrane Solutions has announced a $70 million expansion at the site. The expansion is driven by growing product demand in biogas and hydrogen recovery applications, as well as customer needs for the use of nitrogen for the aerospace industry and cleaner fuels for the marine industry.

Air Products is the global leader in the production of gas separation and purification membranes. We were recently awarded the Lorenzo Cagnoni Award for Green Innovation for our PRISM® GreenSep LNG Membrane Separator at Ecomondo, a green technology expo, in Rimini, Italy.

The PRISM® GreenSep LNG Membrane Separator, launched earlier this year, received the award in the bioenergy and agriculture sector. The Lorenzo Cagnoni Award for Green Innovation is awarded to the most cutting-edge technology in the various exhibition sectors and the three most innovative start-ups. The recognition is awarded in the following categories: waste as a resource, water cycle and blue economy, bioenergy and agriculture, circular and regenerative bio-economy, site & soil restoration, and environmental monitoring and earth observation.

Our PRISM® GreenSep LNG membrane solution for bio-LNG producers delivers both financial and environmental sustainability benefits for our customers, by enabling a smooth, direct feed of biomethane into the liquefaction process,” said Dr. Erin Sorensen, General Manager, Membrane Solutions. “I am honored to see our innovative technology be recognized by the Italian Exhibition Group with the Lorenzo Cagnoni Award for Green Innovation as evidence of the work that our team does every day to generate a cleaner future.”

PRISM® GreenSep LNG membrane separators eliminate the need for intermediate purification technologies such as amine scrubbing or thermal swing adsorption during bio-LNG production, allowing for a higher yield of bio-LNG while also reducing operational expenses and energy consumption. Bio-LNG is liquefied biomethane created from an organic source such as food, animal, or municipal waste.

Ecomondo is a key event for the green and circular economy where industrial groups, stakeholders, policy makers, opinion leaders, local authorities, research bodies and institutions come together and put in place key elements that define the strategies for the development of European Union environmental policy.
